Beach Paintings always inspire thoughts of holidays, long walks, warm breezes and relaxation.

The paintings featured here were produced during a themed workshop where gorgeous sea and sand colours were used to explore several fluid art techniques. The result was a series of stunning beach and ocean themed paintings that will bring the outdoors inside and brighten the mood with memories of summers past.

“Coast” was created at a high flow acrylic fluid art pour painting workshop where we specifically worked with beach colours. this piece was create by setting up two dirty cups, one with ocean blues, aquas and greens – the other with sandy yellows and beige-browns.

Both cups were upturned at once and then a strip of dividing white was squirted onto the canvas in between them. Once the cups were lifted the canvas was tilted to stretch the paint whilst maintaining the composition where the ocean colours were divided from the sandy colours by the white strip.

Once the composition had been settled, then white was added in curving lines to approximate cresting waves coming into the shore. These were texturised with a straw and the palette knife to better depict frothing wave tops.

“Aequor”, meaning “deep sea” was such an interesting piece as it really did not want to be created. It was created near the end of the workshop and represents several attempts to achieve a pleasing result, where each technique employed was followed by another.

This piece was poured, swiped, puddled, balloon kissed and finally added to with white paint to form the rings and these were texturised with a straw. The result is an almost glowing representation of deep seam life forms who were literally coaxed into having their photo taken.

“Sea Puppy” is an adorable piece where after making out the form of an excited puppy that is all I can see in this image.

Sea Puppy was created using the Colander technique and very controlled tilting where I stretched the paint out without deforming the original geometric composition too much.

The result is a happy piece that I find truly looks like a boisterous little dog making an escape from the canvas.

“Solis”, is another experiment with several techniques that has resulted in a very summery piece.

A swipe that has magically ended up suggesting a headland in the distance and a bay of water in the foreground, Solis has a brightly lit, almost bleached look to it.

Then a few balloon kisses were added which have ended up looking like several summer suns or airborne beach balls. All in all a bright image reminiscent of days at the beach.

And lastly an experiment with diluted high flow acrylics.

After preparing paints to the usual consistency this technique simply involves diluting them further to a very runny consistency. Layering these super diluted paints over a flooded canvas can result in exceptional blooming of cells.

This was an initial attempt at playing with diluted paints, and the results are so-so. Clearly more work required to achieve a more striking piece.
